On most occasions, the tank will not explode if it’s overfilled, but it will start to warp the metal of the tank. However, if a tank doesn’t return to its original shape, it could show that the tank is worn out and not fit for use. Something that may also happen during hydrostatic testing is that the metals may rip, which would obviously mean that the tank has failed its test and is unsafe to use. This usually happens if the tank has not been properly maintained for a while or has not had regular visual checks.
